Self Worth-A Whole New Revelation!

If you know me in person, you know how I get when I am blessed by the Word of God! Last Saturday, I went up to my husband and told him, "Summer is here, and we need to change things up!" We set a reasonable budget to get a few things I hoped would give me a sense of belonging in a new country, only to start the week feeling like it was not enough.

Then I came across a sermon about self-worth. I wanted to share some notes I took and how God has been speaking to me throughout the week about this.

All the physical things we seek are only conveyors or expressions of a deeper spiritual and psychological longing. If we are being honest with ourselves, through the new car, clothes, the promotion, or the numbers, we hope to find something else. It could be significance, acceptance, recognition, acknowledgement, advancement, or even safety. The list goes on.

All these things we seek are good. In fact, we have not been called to be mediocre Christians. The problem is that, at some point, we have been led to believe that what we are truly seeking will finally be fulfilled once we get these things.

They say that the world of the great is very deceitful. Many of the things we chase, hoping they will give us acceptance, acknowledgement, significance, or a sense of worth, appear to indeed satisfy others. But the reality of that is God created us in a way that these things cannot satisfy us as we hope.

Genesis 37:15 asks, "What Seekest Thou?"

What is our self-worth tied to?

I loved the example the preacher used of what a dying man seeks after while on his deathbed. When you are faced with the reality that life may be over in the next couple of hours, what is the first thing you would seek? The answer is peace.

It is a waste of time to suspend your pursuit of peace until you get the house, the job, the promotion, the children, the marriage… These are all psychological ways that the world has shaped our understanding of what peace is.

John 14:27 says, "Peace I give to you, not as the world giveth, let not your heart be troubled, neither be afraid."

I hope this triggers a longing for a peace that can only be received through a relationship with Christ. So that as we seek these things, we can live life more effectively with the understanding that our identity is found in our maker.
